Not illustrated. 1905 Excerpt: ...was litted up with an extensive and co6tly cooking apparatus for the Mayor's Inauguration Dinner and other leasts, but as these functions have long since been discontinued, the space is now appiopriated to other purposes. The Municipal buildings were opened by the late Earl of Carnarvon, in lf7b as part of a larger scheme by which it was proposed to remove the existing Town Hall and widen the roadway at this dangerous point, but vested interests again prevailed. On the staircase are large-sized portraits of King George III. and Queen Charlotte, presented to the town in 1879 by Mrs. Louisa Gouldmg, of Wilminster, Henley-on-Thames, widow of the Rev. Edward Goulding, a former Yicar of Brimpton, and mother of Mrs. Hamilton, whose husband was for a time Vicar of Greenham. They were presented to Governor Burt on the occasion of his being sent out to govern the Leeward Islands. Mrs. Goulding's husband's grandfather bought the Maiden Erleigh estate, near Reading, of Governor Burt, and these portraits of King George and his Queen, then in the house, were purchased at the same.time. They were supp osed to be by Gainsborough, but there is far greater reason to consider them the work of Allan Ramsay, principal portrait painter to George III., and son of Allan Ramsay, the celebrated Scottish poet.
