They already possessed the plateau of Jtiuliln, and the wholo of tliu Hauran on the E. of it; and now they conquered and colonized the province of Jedir (the Arabic form of tho Hebrew Jetur), which lay lictween their other possessions and Mount Heruion. (1 Chron. v. 19-23.) Subsequent history shows that the luirdy Ishniaelites were neither annihilated nor entirely dispossessed, for, in the second century before our era, Aristobulus king of the Jews conquered tho province and gave tho people their choice of Judaism or banishment (Jos. Ant. xiii. 11, 3). The physical geography of the country here as elsewhere, serves;, to illustrate history. The Iturteans retired foil a time, before a more powerful enemy, to the recesses of this rocky plain, and to the heights of Hcriunu--just as the Arabs ol-Fudhl do now on the approach of the 'Ananoh. Tho Ituronns seem to have been a bravo people, attached to their country, fond of liberty, and with a hereditary tendency to pillage. Strnbo briefly describes them as "a race of vngalioiids," and probably most of their neighbours agreed with him. They liave not yet lost their character.
