Josias Leslie Porter. Good Only. An uncommon first edition copy of Josias Leslie Porter's first book on the Middle East, 'Five Years in Damascus'; complete in two volumes. Josias Leslie Porter was a renowned Irish Presbyterian minister, missionary and traveller, who became an academic administrator. Sent to Damascus as a missionary in the mid nineteenth century, Porter recorded his life in the city in this work, as well as his journeys to destinations including Palmyra, the Hauran, and Lebanon. Providing a fascinating account of the history, topography, and antiquities of the city. Complete with numerous in-text illustrations, and: Seven plates to volume I, one of which is folding, and a folding plan to the rear. Two plates to volume II, and a coloured folding map to the rear. The plans and woodcuts were engraved from Porter's original drawings. In a full cloth binding, with gilt page edges and morocco spine labels. Externally slightly bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine and the odd mark to boards. Small closed tear and slight loss to head of spine, volume I. Small section of loss of cloth to front joint, volume I. Heavy rubbing to spine labels. Worming to boards. Rear hinge split and strained. Front hinges split and weak, may detach with further handling. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedowns, offsetting to endpapers. Offsetting and ink inscription to front free-endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean throughout. Worming throughout, more severe to first and last few pages. Worming to folding maps. Closed tears to folding map to rear of volume II. Good Only.
