Excerpt from A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America, Against the Attack of Mr. Turgot in His Letter to Dr. Price, Dated the Twenty-Second Day of March, 1778, Vol. 1 of 3 They who have had an opportunity of knowing his Excellency, Mr. Adams, lay: an European writer, trace in his features the mofl: unequivocal marks of probity and candour. He unites to that gravity which is fuitable to the dignity of his Ration, an affability which prejudices you in his favour, Although of a hlent turn, as is common to men who engage in important affairs, yet he has a natural eloquence for the difcuflion of important fubje???'ts, and for the recommend ing and enforcmg the meafures and fyflems which are diftated by found policy. He has neither the corrupted nor corrupting prin ciples of Lord Chefierfield, but the plain and virtuous demeanour of Sir William Temple. Like him alfo he is fimple in negociation, where he finds candour in thofe who treat with him; otherwife he has the feverity of a true Republican, his idea of virtue giving him a rigidnefs, which makes, it difficult for him to accommodate himfelf to.
