Gordon Wood is very knowledgeable about the US Revolutionary times and in this book he lays out the beginnings, the ideas that fomented the rebellion, and the long term effects of that Revolution on us today. I highly recommend this book for an understanding of who we are as a country and of the similarities of our reactions to events even today.

Great Source of Information
While this book doesn't cover every detail, it gives a perfect overview of the American Revolution. Anyone doing research on the American Revolution should read this book first.
Gordon Wood does an excellent job of guiding the reader through the American Revolution, following the Founding Fathers and the events that unfolded around them and their British cousins.
I also recommend viewing the Booknotes interview of Gordon Wood that aired on CSPAN.
