This low-budget freak show/cult classic/cultural institution concerns the misadventures of Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) inside a strange mansion that they come across on a rainy night. After the wholesome pair profess their love through an opening song, their car breaks down in the woods, and they seek refuge in a towering castle nearby. Greeting them at the door is a ghoulish butler named Riff Raff (Richard O'Brien), who introduces them to a bacchanalian collection of partygoers dressed in outfits from some sort of interplanetary thrift shop. The host of this gathering is a transvestite clad in lingerie, Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry), a mad scientist who claims to be from another planet. With assistants Columbia (Nell Campbell) and Magenta (Patricia Quinn) looking on, Frank unveils his latest creation -- a figure wrapped in gauze and submerged in a tank full of liquid. With the addition of colored dyes and some assistance from the weather, Frank brings to life a blonde young beefcake wearing nothing but skimpy shorts, who launches into song in his first minute of life. Just when Brad and Janet think things couldn't get any stranger, a biker (Meat Loaf) bursts onto the scene to reclaim Columbia, his ex-girlfriend. When Frank kills the biker, it's clear that Brad and Janet will be guests for the night, and that they may be next on Frank's list -- whether for murder or carnal delights is uncertain. And just what is that mystery meat they're eating for dinner, anyway? In addition to playing Riff Raff, O'Brien wrote the catchy songs, with John Barry and Richard Hartley composing the score. If you're too old to want to go to the midnight showing at your local theater, this is a great substitute, provided you've already cleared the floor to dance and sing (popcorn not recommended unless you love cleaning). This movie remains great fun--perhaps more so now than even the original--and is a MUST HAVE for any serious movie fan.

Don't Lose This One Between Genres
TITLE: The Rocky Horror Picture Show
GENRE: Musical Comedy based on The Rocky Horror Show
CAST: Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien, Patricia Lady Stevens Quinn, Nell Campbell, Peter Hinwood, Jonathan Adams and Charles Gray
PLOT: Romance gone right meets excursion gone wrong meets weather gone bad meets dark mysterious castle gone haywire meets mad zombie birthday crowd meets mad scientist meets adonis incarnate meets failed experiments meets pick axe meets real scientist meets corpse for dinner meets sexual escapades as long as no one whispers a word meets medusa machine meets floor show from hell meets aliens come to stop the mad scientist meets his doom.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: Closed minds = 2 of 10: Open minds will want to keep sending money every time they watch it 9 of 10; Transvestite costumes lacy garters and corsets, okay, Dialog, okay Songs okay choreography okay lighting and sets okay high heels okay, make-up (lots of it) okay swim scenes went by too fast. That this is a take off off most musical comedies and SciFi Class B movies is evident in their opening homage to the genre. Scientific machinery hokey as it should be.
DVD BONUS: The film as ended in USA and in UK versions, commentary overdub; dvd-Rom Game (didn't check it out) audience participation cues. Introduction from the fan club (All on one Disc? Yup)
ADDED NOTES: This movie was made at the end of Hollywood musical comedy genre and the beginning of MTV. It was filling the need for a generation lost to Gene Kelly and Doris Day who still wanted that group enjoyment of just illogically breaking out in song. For about a decade, this film was shown regularly on Weekend nights at midnight showings and developed a cult of college aged fans. A theater in Germany in fact holds the record for continuous showing of a single feature by continually looping this film since 1977! I almost wanted to join in but I can't walk in heels (Don't ask how I know)

I have always loved this movie, but it has been so hard to get. I am very happy that I have now found it and can watch it whenever I like. Just brilliant acting by Tim Curry (Frankenfurter), Meatloaf and many others.
If you haven't seen this movie, you don't live on this planet, Janet.
