Here she meets a very unusual cast of characters - a recrow, a Tin Woodman, and a Cowardly Lion. Together they go on a quest to see the Wizard of Oz, each of them seeking what they want most in life. Making their way along the Yellow Brick Road through a series of hair-raising encounters, they arrive at the Emerald City only to be told by the Wizard that they first must kill the Wicked Witch of the West before he grants their wishes. One of America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz speaks movingly about what every child needs: the Woodman's compassion, the Lion's courage, and the Scarecrow's wisdom.

This was one of the few books I owned as a child. This was my first fantasy novel and I did read it over and over. Of course I built stories about what else may have happened in OZ as I read. I did read it until the covers fell off.
As my kids grew of course I introduced them to OZ, to Dorthy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman...and the Lion. But they went on and read many of the other OZ books I never did.
I think things that last, things that one generation can share with the next...and for that matter the next and the next are great and should be cherished.
