Seller's Description:
VG/VG. May have light cover wear. May be inscribed by previous owner or have owner's sticker inside, otherwise clean and tight. Black cloth boards with stamped lettering, black dj with color illustration. 172 pp. 33 color plates, 50 color figures, frontispiece and additional illustrations. Large, lovely pictures and fascinating text. In 1996 an extraordinary discovery of Buddhist stone sculptures was found in a pit in eastern China. The high quality of the sculptures, their large number and their deliberate burial raise many questions. Why should over 400 Buddhist figures, dating in the main to the sixth century, have been buried at some point in the twelfth century in a carefully constructed pit within the precincts of a temple situated in the eastern province of Shandong? A selection of the finest sculptures were brought to the United States for exhibit, after appearing in Berlin, Zurich, and London.
