The writer is the fortunate possessor of historical material of undoubted truth and interest. It is the long-lost journal of Colonel Ebenezer Zane, one of the most prominent of the hunter-pioneer, who labored in the settlement of the Western country. The story of that tragic period deserves a higher place in historical literature than it has thus far been given, and this unquestionably because of a lack of authentic data regarding the conquering of the wilderness. Con-sidering how many years the pioneers struggled on the border of this country, the history of their efforts is meager and obscure

Spirit of the Border is the second book in the Ohio Valley Triogy composed of Betty Zane, the first book Zane Grey ever wrote, and The Last Trail. All three books detail the life of the Zane family as they carved out a home and community in what was then the frontier, or the 'west'. Historically accurate as to the characters involved, except for the lead hero and heroine, these books are great history about a time and a place few people know about--the years leading up to and just after the American Revolution, and how these early pioneers lived, the conditions they faced, the outlaws they encountered, and the Indians who either made life miserable or who could become your greatest ally in survival. The chapters dealing with the Moravian missionaries and the settlement the Indians called the Village of Peace and its destruction are worth the price of the book all by themselves. This book is an excellent read.

great book!
if you like American history, you'll love this book. It is written realistically and graphically; men - if you love westerns, etc., this is the book for you - it should be made into a movie.
