The resulting tale of abuse is brutal and sex becomes for him a "compulsive collision of pain and pleasure" and he spirals into mental and emotional crises. The author's first novel, "The Push" (1993) was the basis for the 2009 film "Precious", winner of Academy Awards for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress (Mo'Nique).
