Y sont invit�s les Cruchot et les des Grassins, deux familles rivales qui esp�rent marier l'un de leurs fils avec la fille du p�re Grandet.Survient alors Charles Grandet, le cousin de Paris dont le charme et l'�l�gance ne laissent pas Eug�nie indiff�rente.
