La pi�ce est difficile � jouer: elle fait intervenir un grand nombre de personnages, elle est longue, le r�le titre est particuli�rement imposant (plus de 1600 vers), les d�cors sont tr�s diff�rents d'un acte � l'autre et elle comporte une sc�ne de bataille. Le succ�s en �tait si peu assur� qu'Edmond Rostand lui-m�me, redoutant un �chec, se confondit en excuses aupr�s de l'acteur Coquelin, le jour de la g�n�rale, pour l'avoir entra�n� dans une pareille aventure . La suite des �v�nements d�mentit les craintes de l'auteur: ce fut un triomphe; non seulement la repr�sentation fut salu�e par vingt minutes ininterrompues d'applaudissements, mais le ministre des Finances Georges Cochery vint dans la loge �pingler sa propre L�gion d'honneur sur la poitrine de l'auteur en expliquant: Je me permets de prendre un peu d'avance. Rostand re�ut en effet officiellement la d�coration quelques jours plus tard, le 1er janvier 1898. Le succ�s fut consid�rable, en France comme � l'�tranger. Le personnage de Cyrano est devenu, dans la litt�rature fran�aise, un arch�type humain au m�me titre qu'Hamlet ou Don Quichotte (auquel il tire son chapeau dans la pi�ce). Deux statues du personnage ont �t� �rig�es sur des places de Bergerac, en Dordogne, quoiqu'il n'existe aucun lien entre cette ville et le v�ritable Cyrano.
