The story follows the adventures of Lewis Wetzel, a famous frontiersman and Indian fighter, and Jonathan Zane, his friend and fellow frontiersman. The two men are tasked with protecting their settlement from Native American raids and attacks, and they must also navigate the complex relationships between the settlers and the indigenous peoples of the region. The novel is known for its vivid descriptions of the Ohio River Valley and the challenges faced by those who lived on the frontier. Grey also explores themes of loyalty, honor, and the clash of cultures between the settlers and the Native Americans. The Spirit of the Border has been praised for its historical accuracy and its portrayal of the complex relationships between different groups of people during a tumultuous time in American history.1906. This is Grey's second novel about life along the early American western frontier. In the introduction he writes that he does not intend to apologize for what many readers may call the brutality of the story; but rather to explain that its wild spirit is true to the life of the Western border as it was known only a little more than one hundred years ago. The book follows the life and adventures of two brothers Jim, a Christian missionary and Joe, a newcomer to frontier life. It is a historical novel, but Grey uses real people such as Lewis Wertzl (Death Wind) and the renegades Simon and Jim Girty to tell the story of those who acted as the American border rangers. Spirit of the Border is the second book in the Ohio Valley Triogy composed of Betty Zane, the first book Zane Grey ever wrote, and The Last Trail. All three books detail the life of the Zane family as they carved out a home and community in what was then the frontier, or the 'west'. Historically accurate as to the characters involved, except for the lead hero and heroine, these books are great history about a time and a place few people know about--the years leading up to and just after the American Revolution, and how these early pioneers lived, the conditions they faced, the outlaws they encountered, and the Indians who either made life miserable or who could become your greatest ally in survival. The chapters dealing with the Moravian missionaries and the settlement the Indians called the Village of Peace and its destruction are worth the price of the book all by themselves. This book is an excellent read.

great book!
if you like American history, you'll love this book. It is written realistically and graphically; men - if you love westerns, etc., this is the book for you - it should be made into a movie.
