The story is set in the fictional town of Barchester, where the main character, Mr. Harding, is the warden of a charitable institution called Hiram's Hospital. The novel explores the conflict between the traditional values of the Church of England and the changing social and political landscape of Victorian England.Mr. Harding is a kind and gentle man who is devoted to his job at the hospital, but he is also a man of conscience who is troubled by the fact that he is paid a large sum of money for his role as warden. This becomes a source of controversy when a young journalist named John Bold challenges the legality of Mr. Harding's salary, arguing that it is not in line with the original intentions of the hospital's founder. As the story unfolds, Mr. Harding finds himself caught in the middle of a bitter dispute between the church and the secular world, and he must decide where his loyalties lie. Along the way, he is supported by his daughter, Eleanor, and his friend, the archdeacon Grantly, but he also faces opposition from his son-in-law, a reform-minded doctor named John Bold. The Warden is a novel that explores themes of morality, duty, and the clash between tradition and progress. The Warden is the first of six novels in Trollope's Barsetshire series. They are set in Barsetshire, a fictional English county, and follow the Reverend Septimus Harding. In this book he works conscientiously as the warden for a charitable institution for retired men. After being accused of making undue profits, even for a sinecure, he resigns and his story is continued in the second novel, Barchester Towers.
