The thriving, proserous communities in Morris and Union Counties, New Jersey presented an attractive target during the trolley mania that swept America in the early 20th century. In 1904, the Morris County Traction Company was formed to serve this population. It took 10 years to complete the system that eventually run to 50 miles, extending from Lake Hopatcong and Boonton through Dover, Morristown, Summit, and other communities to Union and Maplewood, with connections to Elizabeth and Newark. Due toi the proliferation of automobiles and paved highways, the line ceased operation in 1928.
