Seller's Description:
Very good in Very good jacket. xxviii, 512, [4] pages. Inscribed on the half title page by the author. Inscription reads: For David and Eugenie Chauchavadze, with my admiration and respect, James Blair Lovell. Prince David Chavchavadze (May 20, 1924-October 5, 2014) was a British-born American author and a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer of Georgian-Russian origin. Chavchavadze entered the United States Army in 1943 and served during World War II as liaison for the U.S. Army Air Force Lend-Lease supply operations to the Soviet Union. After the war, he entered Yale University where he was a member of The Society of Orpheus and Bacchus, the second longest running a cappella group in the United States. He spent more than two decades of his career as a CIA officer in the Soviet Union Division. Mrs. Chavchavadze was born Eugenie de Smitt. She was a supporter of Russian dissidents; and the wife of David Chavchavadze, a descendant of the Romanov dynasty that ruled Imperial Russia for 300 years. Book includes Introduction, Epilogue, Appendices, Source Notes, Bibliography, Acknowledgments, and Index. Topics covered include The Court of the Double Eagle; The Lost Princess; "That I Have Passed Through'; Who I Am and Who I Pretend to Be"; The Czarina of Charlottesville; and This Is Such a Great Mystery. As part of his exhaustive research, in 1989 the author acquired the largest cache of Romanov memorabilia still in private hands. It consists of documents, letters, paintings, scores of unpublished photographs, many of which taken by members of the Russian imperial family; motion picture film; and more than one hundred hours of audio tapes that are the only existing record of Anastasia telling her life's story in her own words. Above all, James Blair Lovell's revelatory account of the lost princess tells the haunting story of a girl--scarred for life by the brutality of her Bolshevik captors--who grew to adulthood obsessed with trying to maintain her anonymity while seeking affirmation of her true identity. Eminent Romanov historian James Blair Lovell's major work, Anastasia: The Lost Princess, was first published in 1991. When he died, he left behind a vast and important archive of Romanov documents and artifacts. He was also a journalist whose work appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Washington Times. This reads like a detective novel, [and] presents an often shocking portrait totally at odds with the Anastasia legend of stage and screen. The fullest account of the mystery to date. --Publishers Weekly.
