Seller's Description:
Fine. First edition (stated), two volumes in color illustrated slpicase. Signed on the half title page of Vol. 1 by Sherman E. Lee. Hardcovers in brown cloth with printed paper front board labels. Concertina-style, 74 and 62 pp. Foreword by Daniel J. Boorstin. ntroduction and commentary on the plates by Sherman E. Lee. Section of double page color reproductions of Hiroshige's artwork. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), usually identified simply as Higoshige, is recognized as the last great master of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock-style printing tradition. The majority of his work was atypical of the genre (that commonly depicted beautiful women, prominent actors, and urban scenes of Japan's Edo period) in that his work usually presented landscapes in both horizonal and vertical formats. His death marked a rapid decline in the ukito-e genre, corresponding with westernaization of Japanese cultule but Hiroshige influenced western European painting of the late 19th century, including that of Monet, Matisse, and Van Gogh.
