Seller's Description:
Good. 213, [1] pages. Bill McGowan Timeline Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Appendix is the textbook used at McGowan's Umpiring School. Index. Inscribed by author on title page. Two additional inscriptions on title page (association with author or recipient unknown). Foreword by Jim Evans. Bottom front corner of cover creased. After earning a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Maryland, he turned to a career in Human Resource Development. In retirement his interest in the history of baseball, especially the history of the Negro leagues, led to two biographies of Negro leaguers, Willie Wells and Effa Manley, one book on the history of the Baltimore Elite Giants, and, most recently, a book about the integration of the Baltimore Orioles. His first book traced the life and career of his childhood next door neighbor, Bill McGowan, an American League umpire from 1924 to 1954. Hall of Fame umpire Bill McGowan controlled the field of play as much with his personality as with the rulebook; his respected 30-year career, including 2, 532 consecutive games, was among the longest in baseball history. McGowan was the home plate umpire in the first-ever American League pennant playoff game. Famous for his sense of humor, great dramatics, and wild gestures, he was known to turn a strike into a ball if he thought a player deserved a break, or to eject half a team if they annoyed him. He promoted such players as Goose Goslin, Moe Berg, Stanley "Bucky" Harris, and Jimmy Dykes; and founded a school for umpires, which continues as the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School. This richly illustrated biography gives an intimate view of this talented umpire. With research including interviews with players and family members, the work provides a wealth of insights into his profession.
