Though the league had been in operation since 1968, it was Pele's entering the league ( and the soon to follow Georio Chinaglia and Franz Beckenbauer) that put the league on the map. The team would begin to play before sell-out crowds in Giants Stadium. Through flashbacks, the book traces Pele's meteroic rise from poverty to stardom in his native Brazil but focuses on his coming to America.
