Great Illustrated Version
I have read the series multiple times - am a big fan. This edition with Alan Lee illustrations is terrific and the paperback is a solid, usable shape and size. It's perfect for pre-bedtime read-aloud with my 10 year old boys. It's fun to go on the journey through Middle Earth again, but this time with my sons and Alan Lee along!

Better than the movie!
If you loved the film versions (and who doesn't?) then you must read the original. This book has it all: enduring characters, lush settings, action, suspense, romance. If you've been daunted by the size or complexity of this volume, plunge in. This is the original source for elves and dwarves and fantasy creatures we know and love today. Tolkien was a pioneer in the field and his books only improve with each reread. And if you've never read Fellowship of the Ring before, you'll be treated to deleted scenes and bonus characters. Just think of it as the EXTENDED, extended version.
