Cooper's most enduringly popular novel combines heroism and romance with powerful criticism of the destruction of nature and tradition. Set against the French and Indian siege of Fort William Henry in 1757, "The Last of the Mohicans" recounts the story of two sisters, Cora and Alice Munro, daughters of the English commander, who are struggling to be reunited with their father. They are aided in their perilous journey by Hawk-eye, a frontier scout and his companions Chingachgook and Uncas, the only two survivors of the Mohican tribe. But their lives are endangered by the Mangua, the savage Indian traitor who captures the sisters, wanting Cora to be his squaw. In setting Indian against Indian and the brutal society of the white man against the civilization of the Mohican, Cooper, more than any author before or since, shaped the American sense of itself as a nation.

FROM THE PUBLISHER-THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS contains the classic portrait of the man of moral courage who severs all connections with a society whose values he can no longer accept. Despite his chosen exile, Hawk-eye (Natty Bumppo), the frontier scout, risks his life to escort two sisters through hostile Indian country. On the dangerous journey he enlists the aid of the Mohican Chingachgook. And in the challenging ordeal that follows, in their encounters with deception, brutality, and the deaths of loved ones, the friendship between the two men deepens-the scout and the Indian, each with a singular philosophy of independence that has been nurtured and shaped by the silent, virgin forest. '. in his immortal friendship of Chingachgook and Natty Bumppo [Cooper] dreamed the nucleus of a new society A stark, stripped human relationship of two men, deeper than the deeps of sex. Deeper than property deeper than fatherhood, deeper than marriage, deeper than Love. '-D. H. Lawrence. 'THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS raises again the question of the efficacy of human effort to control irrational forces at work in individual men, races, and nations. The question has never been more pertinent than now. '-James Franklin Beard. inventory #31536.
A professor told me this was originally ment for children, but the subject matter is rather adult. For the most part this is a good book. The description of the land can get tedious, but it is neccessary for the tone of the story.
Cora is an interesting character. Her romance is the element which drives most of the story. Its sad that too much of the novel deals whith her rather dull sister.
This is a well written adventure tale. The book is ten times better than the movie.
