Access to his papers and letters and the cooperation of his family and friends were promised. As an occasional book reviewer, I was perhaps more aware of the stigma attached to the term "authorized biography" than most. I told the publisher I wouldn't be interested unless the Thurber estate--that is, Helen Thurber--would allow me sole control over the final manuscript. Helen consented, legal agreements and contracts were signed, and I began work in early 1971......When I finished my final draft of the biography, I presented her with a copy for her emendations and comments, in conformity with our agreement. Her emendations were comparatively few but her comments were numerous. The gist of her complaints was that I had treated her husband's life in too negative a fashion. I am sorry she felt that way. What I did was simply take the facts as they were revealed to me from letters, personal papers, published matter, interviews and, with a minimum of preconceptions and using Thurber's own words as much as possible, set them down...
