William E Naff
William E. Naff (1929-2005) was founding chair of the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he was professor of Japanese literature. His translation of Tōson's Before the Dawn (Yoake mae) was awarded the 1987 Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Prize for the Translation of Japanese literature.
