Sethares is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he teaches about electro-acoustics and signal processing. A focus of his research is the relationship between the rhythmic qualities of music a" how they are perceived biologically and the qualities of the instruments or machine making the sounds. This is the subject of Rhythm and Transforms. The book can be seen as a companion to Prof. Setharesa (TM) book Timbre, Tuning, Spectrum, Scale that examined the relationships between musical scales, actual frequencies and the human perception of sounds and harmonies. R&T examines rhythmic qualities of music in a similar fashion and is based on work Professor Sethares has published as technical papers in the major technical journals such as the IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing, the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, IEEE Trans. on Speech and Audio Processing, the Computer Music Journal and the J. of New Music Research as well as that which he has presented at a number of major conferences.
