Espinel viaj mucho, y en uno de sus viajes fue hecho prisionero en Argel por los piratas. Liberado luego por los genoveses, sirvi tres a os en Italia como militar. De vuelta a su tierra, tuvo mucho prestigio como poeta y m sico, y se le atribuye la inclusi n de la quinta cuerda a la guitarra. Aunque escribi en las principales formas po ticas de su tiempo, alcanz con la d cima, conocida tambi n con el nombre de espinela , un nivel insuperable. Espinel adem s escribi en prosa, y es c lebre por la novela picaresca La vida del escudero Marcos de Obreg n, en la que se inspir m s tarde el autor franc s Lesage para escribir su Gil Blas de Santillana.
