TIMOTHY RAYLOR is associate professor of English at Carleton College, where he has taught since 1992. He is the coeditor of Culture and Cultivation in Early-Modern England(1992), of Samuel Hartlib and Universal Reformation (1994), and was guest editor of a special issue of The Seventeenth Century entitled The Cavendish Circle (1994).
