Timothy Mason Roberts is professor of history at Western Illinois University in Macomb, about thirty miles from the Standards' Civil War home. A teacher and scholar of antebellum and Civil War-era America and the role of America in the world, he is the author of Distant Revolutions: 1848 and the Challenge to American Exceptionalism and coeditor of American Exceptionalism (4 volumes).
