Founded in 1830, it is the largest geographical society in Europe and one of the most active in the world. It holds a unique collection of two million maps, photographs, books and documents which was recently made accessible to the public. Robin Butlin is Emeritus Professor of Geography at the University of Leeds, where he was Professor of Historical Geography (2000-03). He has published extensively in the field of historical geography, and is currently engaged in research on the history of geographical societies in England, South Africa and Australia. Jonathan Bastable is a freelance writer and journalist. He has edited many books, and writes regularly on foreign destinations for Cond Nast Traveller . His Voices from D-Day was published in 2004.
