Susan Peterson Gateley is a native Upstate New Yorker, former teacher and icthyoplankton taxonomist, who single-handed the wooden sloop Ariel in search of stories for boating and nature magazines for seventeen years. She has a master's degree in fisheries science and has sailed coastal waters, Lake Ontario and, more recently, the New York Canal System, with vessels ranging from fourteen to forty-seven feet.
