Bob & Sue Miller grew up in a small Amish community in Ohio. Christian teaching and good home cooking were part of their upbringing, a heritage which continued when they established their own home. In the late 1960's the Millers purchased property on US 20 in Middlebury, Indiana. Back then it was a truck stop, but they saw other possibilities. After renovation, the restaurant re-opened as Das Dutchman Essenhaus, a six-day Amish restaurant, complete with Amish and Mennonite cooks and wait-staff. What began as a small restaurant has expanded into one of Indiana's largest and finest restaurants, a bakery, a country inn, numerous shops, and a wholesale food business, employing up to 450 during tourist season. After enjoying a memorable dining experience, many guests ask about the unique recipes prepared in the Essenhaus kitchens.
