Steven S. Ross is Visiting Professor for Analytic Journalism and co-director of the Institute for Analytic Journalism at Boston University's College of Communications. He's on leave from Columbia University's Graduate school of Journalism where he is an associate professor and heads the science writing program. He holds a BS in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MS in journalism from Columbia. Ross broke into full time journalism editing an environmental newsletter for McGraw-Hill, in 1970. His career has been mainly in magazine journalism, but includes many assignments and consultancies for newspapers, wire services and broadcast organizations. This is his 19th book; others have included works on product safety, environmental issues, statistics, construction disasters, finance, and new media. He started teaching as an adjunct at Columbia in 1973, and joined the full-time faculty in 1985. Ross has won many awards for his writing and community service. He lectures all over the world. For the past three years, he has spent much of his time in Central Europe, making 15 trips to Bosnia and Croatia. He has conducted the annual Middleberg/Ross surveys of media and cyberspace (by far the largest in their field) for the past eight years, and has conducted research for the Pulitzer Prize Board and National Council for the Aging, among others.
