As a Marine Corps photographer, his assignments included everything from combat photography to routine public relations photos of hospitals, orphanages, and visits by U.S. political figures. On his own, he photographed the human side of war, as it was seen by the men and women in uniform. This book is a collection of photos and stories recounting his experience. Although it chronicles the events that changed so many youthful idealists into disillusioned outcasts, almost none of the images are the "blood and guts" scenes so typical of other books on Vietnam. Curtis concentrates on the day to day events- the sad, the funny, the tragic and the inspirational-and strives to answer the question most commonly asked of any Vietnam vet: "What was it really like?"
