Shook
Shook is a poet, translator, and editor who has worked with a wide variety of languages. Their debut collection, Our Obsidian Tongues, was published in the UK in 2013, and was longlisted for the International Dylan Thomas Prize. Poems from that collection have been translated into over a dozen languages, including Isthmus Zapotec, Kurdish, and Uyghur. Pablo Jofré's translation of the book into Spanish was published in Chile by Los Perros Románticos in 2019. Shook's poetry films have screened in 20+ cities on four continents, and their collection of poetry was adapted into a film in Rwanda. Shook has been awarded a 2017 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for their translations of Conceição Lima, a 2019 Lannan Residency, a 2020 Global Africa Translation Fellowship from The Africa Institute, for their translations of Francisco Tenreiro, and the 2021 Words Without Borders/Academy of American Poets Poems in Translation Prize, again for their work with Conceição Lima. Shook has translated over 20 books, including work by Mario Bellatin, Jorge Eduardo Eielson, Kyn Taniya, Tedi López Mills, Víctor Terán, Pablo Jofré, Farhad Pirbal, Al-Saddiq Al-Raddi, Conceição Lima, Mikeas Sánchez, and Zêdan Xelef.
