In 1994 he returned at the invitation of the African National Congress to help with its campaign in South Africa's first democratic election. Founding editor of the Penguin African Library, he is the author of a number of important books, including Political Africa , The Crisis of India , The Race War and, most recently, The Black Diaspora .
