American author Rodrigues Ottolengui (1861 - 1937) was born in Charleston, South Carolina and moved to New York City, where he would spend most of his adult life. American author Rodrigues Ottolengui (1861 - 1937) was born in Charleston, South Carolina and moved to New York City, where he would spend most of his adult life. He was a dentist and also editor of Items of Interest: A Monthly Magazine of Dental Art, Science, and Literature for thirty-five years. Ottolengui was one of the first to use X-rays and was also interested in entomology, taxidermy, and photography. Today, Ottolengui is remembered as an early writer of detective fiction, with four novels and a short story collection published during the 1890s. Final Proof, was cited by Ellery Queen as one of Queen's Quorum-the most important collections of detective short stories. Before the Fact, first published in 1901, was also a bestseller. He died at his New York residence in 1937, a year after his wife's death. See less
