Leighton became an authority on caring for dogs and wrote numerous works on the topic. Robert Leighton, a Scottish journalist, editor, and writer of boys' fiction, lived from 5 June 1858 to 11 May 1934. He was born in the Scottish town of Ayr to poet Robert Leighton and Elizabeth Jane Campbell. He received his education at the Liverpool school connected to the Hope Street Unitarian Chapel, and at the age of 14, he started his career as a journalist. In 1879, he relocated to London and started working as an assistant editor for Young People magazine. He met Marie Connor, his future wife and another successful novelist, through his job at Young People. Leighton became an authority on caring for dogs and wrote numerous volumes on the subject. Leighton and Marie Connor got married at Marylebone in the first quarter of 1889 after they eloped in 1889. Leighton served as the Daily Mail's literary editor from 1896 to 1899, Marie was a seasoned novelist. They had four children.
