Rishi Goyal is Director of the Medicine, Literature and Society major in the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University, USA. Dr. Goyal's research, writing and teaching focuses on the reciprocal transformations that result when new ideas about health, disease and the body find forms of expression in fiction and memoirs. His most recent work explores the political, aesthetic, and social dimensions of the representation of physical trauma in literature. His writing has appeared in The Living Handbook of Narratology, Aktuel Forskning. Litteratur, Kultur og Medier, and The Los Angeles Review of Books among other places. Dr. Goyal received his MD (2001) and his PhD in English and Comparative Literature (2010) from Columbia University. He was Chief Resident in Emergency Medicine at New York-Presbyterian (2009-10). Before returning to Columbia in 2012, Dr. Goyal was Director of Medical Humanism and Assistant Professor of English Literature and Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona where he was named Teacher of the Year (2011). He is currently an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department at Columbia University Medical Center and a Visiting Professor at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense. See less
