Upon the completion of her habilitation at the same institution, she taught at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Bamberg. Her research has centered on autobiography, minority writing, social and regional dialects, and bilingualism. In 1984, she hosted the First International Conference on Chicano Culture in cooperation with Juan Bruce-Novoa and Dietrich Briesemeister, thus initiating this now traditional forum of intercultural exchange in the field of Hispanic Studies.
