Ragnhild Munck was born and educated in Denmark, where she worked in the public health sector for many years. She published articles about social issues in Danish newspapers. She lived in Sweden, England, and Egypt, before moving to the United States in 1980 with her four children. When her eldest daughter, Maria, died after a five-year battle with breast cancer, she decided to write Maria's story.
