Black is an author and editor of ten books that deal with the environment, including "Petrolia: The Landscape of America's First Oil Boom" (Johns Hopkins, 2000), "Nature in Everyday Life, Vol. 1: Nineteenth Century and Vol. 2: Twentieth Century" (Greenwood, 2006), and "Crude Reality: Petroleum in World History" (Rowman and Littlefield, 2012).
