Throughout its first four editions the International Festival of Urban Art, OUTDOOR, has had at its core the intent to leave a trace of our present for future generations, a permanent message, left in a neighbourhood of Rome which has been in state of constant evolution since it was first formed. This expression of urban art took place in the Roman area of Ostiense - Garbatella - San Paolo, previously an extensive industrial area. It was created in the 1870s and for almost a century its development was linked to industry and the industrialisation of the city. Since the '60s, thanks to a growing urbanisation and the addition of the areas EUR and Marconi, this industrial district has left space for a new dimension. Today, through a process known as Industrial Archaeology, the area continues to live in a new era strongly influenced by its past. The industrial activity which used to be at the heart of the area can be perceived through its buildings, which today instead host the city's core creative and cultural scene. An area that has a personal past and unmistakable atmosphere, which allows its inhabitants to be in direct contact with previous decades of industry. Through Urban Art performances, OUTDOOR's aim has been to communicate this contemporary phase of social and urban changes to future generations. This has been a conscious process purposefully realised in an area that is remarkable for its capability to sustain a cultural dialogue between generations. Since 2010, the festival has hosted the greatest names in world street art, inviting artists from all over the world to make their mark and offer a different reading of public space. The latest installation of the event took place at the military barracks Ex-Caserma in the Flaminio district. See less
