Dr. Michael J. Manyak is a urologist, explorer, and corporate medical executive with significant expertise in expedition medicine. He is the former Chief Medical Officer for Triple Canopy, Inc., a large international high threat security firm. He is the Chief Medical Advisor for Crisis Response for several Fortune 100 companies and the Washington (DC) Board of Trade. Dr. Manyak received the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, awarded to one in a thousand Eagle Scouts. He serves as Vice President of the National Eagle Scout Association and heads the NESA World Explorer Program, sending nationally-selected Eagles on expeditions. Dr. Manyak maintains an avid interest in field exploration and expedition medicine and edited the highly regarded resource Expedition and Wilderness Medicine. He is a consultant to the medical office of the National Geographic Society and consulted for NPR Radio Expeditions and USA Today for travel medical issues. He was the urologic consultant to the Peace Corps. Dr. Manyak has served on the NASA Aerospace Medicine and Occupational Health Advisory Committee. He served on The Explorers Club Board of Directors for 10 years and is an Associate Editor of The Explorers Journal where his column on Expedition Medicine appears. Dr. Manyak has led a scientific expedition to the Ndoki rain forest in the Congo Basin in a collaborative effort with the World Wildlife Fund, has dived the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha in search of artifacts, was the ship physician on the icebreaker MV Polar Star for an Antarctic expedition, and was the medical director for the RMS Titanic salvage expedition and dove to the Titanic wreck site in the Russian MIR submersible. In recent years, Dr. Manyak was the medical officer on an expedition to the deepest canyon in the world in Peru, on the first scientific dive in Mongolia in Asia's second largest lake, on an expedition to evaluate a new spectacular finding of early human footprints in Tanzania, rode camels in the Gobi Desert observing the very highly endangered wild camel, and explored the Amazon rain forest in the Yasuni National Park of eastern Ecuador. Dr. Manyak has received several awards for educational and editorial activities, is a frequent national and international speaker, has numerous appearances on national networks, and was profiled by Washingtonian Magazine as one of 50 people selected as The Best and Brightest of Washington. He has published over 200 professional abstracts, book chapters, and refereed journal articles and has been granted 11 patents. He maintains his academic appointments as Adjunct Professor of Urology and Engineering at The George Washington University where he was also Professor of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine for ten years.
