Michael French Metcalf is an eleventh-generation descendant of Michael Metcalf, the dornix weaver. Raised in Concord, Massachusetts (near Dedham), he was educated at Middlesex School in Concord and at the University of Pennsylvania; he also served in the U.S. Navy.
