Marlene van Niekerk is op 10 November 1954 op die plaas Tygerhoek naby Caledon gebore. Sy gaan skool op Riviersonderend en Stellenbosch en matrikuleer aan die Ho�rskool Bloemhof. Sy studeer filosofie, tale en letterkunde aan die Universiteite van Stellenbosch, Amsterdam en die Witwatersrand. Sy debuteer in 1977 met die digbundel, Sprokkelster, waarvoor sy die Eug�ne Marais- en die Ingrid Jonkerprys ontvang. Haar eerste roman, Triomf, verskyn in 1995 en word onder meer met die Noma-prys vir die beste publikasie uit Afrika bekroon. Tien jaar later verskyn Agaat wat ses toekennings, onder meer die Hertzogprys vir prosa (2004), ontvang. Die vertaling van Agaat is ook met die Sunday Times Literary Award bekroon. Vir haar digbundel, Kaar, ontvang sy in 2014 die Hertzogprys vir po�sie. Marlene is tans 'n professor in kreatiewe skryfkunde aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch. See less
