Mario Merz
Mario Merz was born in Milan in 1925, the son of an engineer and a music teacher. His studies in medicine halted by the war, he became active in the anti-fascist movement. He joined the Arte Povera movement in 1968 and has long been considered one of its leading exponents. He joined the Arte Povera movement in 1968 and has long been considered one of its leading exponents. Merz's sculptures have been shown in the most important museums around the world, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Nationalgalerie in Berlin. In 2003, Merz received the Imperial Prize for Sculpture from the Japan Art Association of Tokyo. He passed away later that year. See less
