Longus was the author of the ancient Greek novel Daphnis and Chloe, his only known work. Very little is known about his life. It is assumed that he lived on the isle of Lesbos during the 2nd century AD. It has been suggested that the name Longus is merely a misinterpretation of the first word of Daphnis and Chloe's original title which translates to "story of a Lesbian romance" ("Lesbian" meaning "from Lesbos island").
