Leigh B. Grossman , MD, is a Professor of Paediatrics and Chief of the Division of Paediatric Infectious Disease at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, USA. Her clinical work at the University of Virginia, USA is devoted to the care of hospitalized children as an infectious disease consultant. Her research is devoted to the prevention of hospital acquired infection in the critically ill new-born and child. She teaches at the bedside, in the classroom, nationally and internationally. She has edited and authored four books: Infection Control for the Paediatric Patient, Infection Control in the Preschool and Day Care Center, Infection Control for the Healthcare Worker , and The Medical Student's Guide to Successful Residency Matching . Dr. Grossman's history of international experience includes growing up in India, service time with the Peace Corps, consultancies for the Pan American Health Organization in Washington, DC and Chile, Project Hope and the King Faisal Hospital in Saudi Arabia. She has taught in India, Kenya, Costa Rica, Peru, Morocco, India, Burma, Vietnam and has participated in 14 years of medical service work in Haiti. She has directed the pediatric resident International Medicine Elective for 28 years with sites in India, Thailand, Kenya, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, Morocco, and Guatemala. Her career has been honoured with the McLemore Birdsong Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Virginia State Council of Higher Education Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Medical College of Pennsylvania Alumni Achievement Award, the Department of Paediatrics Clinical Excellence Award and the Arnold P.
