He has taught and published articles on a wide variety of subjects--American literature, folklore, composition, and literary censorship. Since 1963 he has carried out six state or national surveys of censorship problems in the public schools. He has been a member and chair of the Committee Against Censorship of the National Council of Teachers of English, chair of the Committee Against Censorship of the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English, and an officer of the Wisconsin Intellectual Freedom Coalition since he helped to establish it in 1977.
