Editor Lawrence Kreisman, Historic Seattle's Program Director, taps the knowledge and talents of local and regional historians and authors Paul Dorpat, Jacqueline Williams, Dotty DeCoster, Dennis Alan Andersen, Luci J. Baker Johnson, and Brooke Best for a publication whose chapters make visible the historical, cultural, and social dimensions of First Hill. Historic Seattle is a public development authority established by Seattle City ordinance in 1974. For 40 years, Historic Seattle has shown what can be done quietly, in the background, with technical assistance and feasibility studies, and loudly, by plunging into full-scale redevelopment of buildings that no one else in the community would assume responsibility to protect. Historic Seattle has tackled many challenging and inspiring projects on its own or in partnership with others. Its strength has been the ability to leverage its limited financial resources with government funding, grants, bank loans, and private investment in order to cover the construction and financing costs to save endangered buildings. Our organization actively seeks projects that will make a difference to the community. See less
