Laurie Lewis lives in Berkeley, California. She grew in the San Francisco Bay area playing classical violin, but then, as a teenager, began listening to blue grass greats like Jean Ritchie and Mississippi John Hurt. Laurie Lewis lives in Berkeley, California. She grew in the San Francisco Bay area playing classical violin, but then, as a teenager, began listening to blue grass greats like Jean Ritchie and Mississippi John Hurt. Almost as soon as she heard it, she fell under the spell of the first great innovators of bluegrass, including Flatt & Scruggs and the Stanley brothers, forming an early and particular attraction to the spookiness of the music of bluegrass founder Bill Monroe. To date, she has recorded ten albums, all available on CD from Rounder Records.Twice voted Female Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association, Lewis has also won legions of country fans and earned a Country Album of the Year award from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. She divides her professional life between the recording studios, music festivals, and concerts, performing with bandmate and partner Tom Rozum.
